Spain passes 3.3 million active enterprises: the challenge is no longer only creation but consolidation

Spain's business base is growing but remains fragmented among small firms that need productivity, stability and access to wider markets.

Spain had 3,310,824 economically active enterprises on 1 January 2025, an increase of 1.7% from the previous year. Commerce remained the largest individual sector with 625,664 companies, representing 18.9% of the total.

The figure describes a broad and geographically distributed business economy. It includes local retailers, professionals, workshops, specialised services, technology businesses and companies with international capacity.

Many enterprises, small structures

Small businesses can respond quickly to customers, but they may also depend heavily on the owner, have limited negotiating power and struggle to invest in technology, branding or recruitment.

Territory shapes opportunity

Madrid and Barcelona concentrate major headquarters and finance, while other cities compete through costs, quality of life, tourism, industry, logistics and specialised knowledge. Business policy must recognise these differences.

Consolidation before expansion

The next objective is not simply to increase the number of enterprises. Spain needs companies able to improve processes, professionalise management, retain talent and build durable relationships with customers and suppliers.
