The new framework will enable identification, credential sharing and electronic signatures with greater control over personal data.

EU Digital Identity Wallets are scheduled to launch at the end of 2026. Citizens, residents and businesses will be able to use them to prove identity, store credentials and sign electronically with greater control over personal data.

Spain is participating in the framework and has supported a common solution designed around security and privacy. The change will affect public administrations, banks, universities, online platforms and private service providers.

Identity becomes verifiable

Instead of sending complete copies of documents, a user will be able to disclose only the required attribute. This can reduce fraud and unnecessary data exposure, but relying organisations must validate credentials and preserve evidence correctly.

Integration is not only technical

Companies need to review onboarding, consent, signatures, support and account recovery. A technical connector alone does not resolve legal responsibilities or create a clear user experience.

Preparation should begin before launch

Organisations should identify which processes require identity, what information is collected and which systems still depend on passwords or manual documents. This audit enables controlled adaptation when wallet use becomes widespread.
